Veteran trainer Pat Duff showed rare emotion when Steel Zip ended 14 months of frustration by winning at Doomben on Saturday.

Duff came up with the quote of the day when Steel Zip ($5.50) beat Listen Son ($.750) by a short head with a half head to Doctor David ($3.30) in the Brisbane Fire Protection Handicap (1350m).

"In the words of the late race caller Bert Bryant, if it was raining actresses I would get Lassie - that has been my luck and Steel Zip's of late," he said.

Duff has cut back his team since the death of his wife Dina two years ago and Steel Zip was the last horse she owned.

"It is a real family affair because Dina loved this horse and I now race it with my kids and a family friend Richard Chang," Duff said.

Steel Zip had not won since the 2012 Keith Noud Quality but he has been one of the most consistent horses in Queensland.

"He has been in black-type company every start since except the Magic Millions races he has contested," Duff added.

Steel Zip does not work between runs and spends much of his time on Sandgate Beach where he paddles for an hour each day.

Duff will now set Steel Zip for the Weetwood Handicap (1300m) at Toowoomba on April 12, a race he won 34 years ago with Ima Cheetah.

Trainer Lindsay Gough continued his run of luck with offspring of the broodmare Glittering Affair when Heza Bobby Dazzler ($7.50) won the Redcliffe Rabbits Handicap (1110m).

Gough has had a run of success with Gala Affair, who is Heza Bobby Dazzler's older half-sister by sire Pure Theatre, winning three recent races in a row with the mare.

He said he had high hopes for Heza Bobby Dazzler but the horse had been jarring up on the hard Brisbane tracks.

"We have really had to nurse him along and it is a matter of seeing how he pulls up before we map out a campaign," Gough said.
