Guy backs Polynikes for Gold Coast riches

Thursday 13 March 2014, 2:36pm

An impressive barrier trial win has convinced trainer Bryan Guy to tackle a lucrative race with first-starter Polynikes.

Guy entered Polynikes for a $100,000 two-year-old race at the Gold Coast and a $13,000 maiden at Eagle Farm on Saturday but he has opted to chase the better prizemoney.

Polynikes was rated by many as the most impressive of the Gold Coast barrier trial winners on March 6 when he scored on a wet track.

Guy has booked in-form jockey Jim Byrne for the ride.

"He has trialled well, he drew the inside alley and the race is worth $64,000 to the winner," Guy said.

"It really is like starting him first-up in the usual Saturday race but the money is better."

Polynikes is by in-form Queensland sire Hidden Dragon out of three-time Doomben winner Athena Mana Mou.

He is related to some of Guy's best gallopers including Sovereign State, Deuxieme and Promoted.

The Noel Doyle-trained Aimee is the early favourite for Polynike's race but the filly, who has won her past two starts, will have to overcome a wide draw.

Doyle is hoping she can measure up to the Group Two BRC Sires' Produce Stakes and Group One J J Atkins Classic during the winter.
