QLD hopeful Margins eyes Randwick success

Queensland trainer Ben Currie is hoping Margins can justify a Sydney Cup nomination when he runs at Randwick on Saturday.

The Toowoomba-based Currie is making a rare trip to Sydney to run the five-year-old in the Listed Randwick City Stakes, hopeful the gelding can build on a black-type success in Queensland last year.

"We think he's going as good as he ever has, so why not have a crack," Currie said.

"He's nominated for the Sydney Cup so we thought no better time to go than now."

A lack of suitable races closer to home, plus a desire to see how Margins measures up against his Sydney rivals, are the main reasons for the trip.

Currie said that while he was aiming for a good result, a trio of Chris Waller-trained opponents looked likely to offer stiff competition - in particular, Junoob and Opinion.

Gai Waterhouse will also have multiple runners while Robert Hickmott has scratched the Lloyd Williams-owned pair of Sea Moon and Tanby.

Despite the quality of opposition, Currie said Margins would acquit himself well.

"He's very tough, he runs the trip, he's got a good gate," he said.

The gelding arrived in Sydney last Sunday with Currie keen to give him plenty of time to settle in.

"We thought it was the best thing to do by the horse, to give him a realistic chance of winning," Currie said.

If he runs well on Saturday, Currie says Margins will stay in the city for an autumn campaign through to the Sydney Cup in late April.
