Jamie Mott keen to give jumps racing a go

Monday 17 March 2014, 2:30pm

Jamie Mott has missed the start of the Victorian jumps racing season but expects to be qualified to compete over the obstacles by the end of the month.

Mott, who won the Listed Bendigo Guineas on Written Up on Saturday, has been working towards getting his jumps licence and plans to combine the two disciplines during the winter.

The 25-year-old has ridden in two jumps trials in recent weeks but needs to complete 10 before being able to ride in races.

"There's trials this Friday at Warrnambool and then the following week at Sandown so I should have them done by then," Mott said.

"Hopefully in two weeks I'll be ready to go."

Mott said riding over the jumps was something he was keen to try, but added he was looking to get on the right horses.

"I want to get on a good jumper and have a good experience," he said.

The heavyweight jockey's desire to add jumps racing to his resume has been fuelled by trips to Ireland, the homeland of his fiancee and manager Carol Anne Brassil.

"Her father and brother-in-law train jumpers so every time I go over there I'm always schooling and getting a feel for it and I really like it," he said.

"So I thought I might give it a go."

Mott will begin his jumps career as an apprentice claiming three kilograms.

The famous Warrnambool carnival is in May and Mott has set his sights on competing in both flat and jumps races during the three days of racing at the country Victorian venue.

"I'll ride on the flat and if I could have a couple of jumps rides it would be amazing, I reckon," he said.

The first jumps race of the Victorian season was run at Warrnambool on Monday.
