Ex-Darley horses set for World Cup night

Monday 17 March 2014, 6:37pm

Ex-Darley horses Long John and Paximadia are two of the former Australian gallopers set to compete on World Cup night in Dubai.

Last year's Caulfield Guineas winner Long John and Sandown Guineas winner Paximadia are among the likely 15-horse field for the Group Two UAE Derby (1900m), one of eight thoroughbred races on the World Cup program at Meydan on March 29.

Both Long John and Paximadia were trained by Peter Snowden in Australia for Darley before being transferred late last year to the Godolphin arm of Sheikh Mohammed's racing operation.

Long John was a dominant winner of the Group Three UAE 2000 Guineas at Meydan in his northern hemisphere debut last month with Paximadia seventh in the same race.

Fellow ex-Darley horses Bello and Complicate are in the likely field for the Group One Golden Shaheen (1200m).

Meanwhile, the main event is the $US10 million ($A11.18 million) Dubai World Cup (2000m).

The likely 16-horse field includes horses familiar to Australia with dual Melbourne Cup runner-up Red Cadeaux and last year's Mackinnon Stakes winner Side Glance.

Dunaden, the 2012 Caulfield Cup winner and 2011 Melbourne Cup winner, is in the Sheema Classic (2400m) while 2013 Melbourne Cup fourth placed Simenon is in the $1 million Gold Cup (3200m).
