Veuvelicious in running for G1 Champagne

Saturday 22 March 2014, 3:20pm

The Champagne Stakes appeared on the horizon for Veuvelicious after a five-length win at Sandown on Saturday.

Veuvelicious went into the Sensational Springvale Plate as a maiden but emerged as a potential Group One contender for trainer Brent Stanley after leading throughout.

Stanley said he would assess the filly's recovery before deciding to set her for the $400,000 Champagne Stakes at Randwick on April 26 or spell her in readiness for a three-year-old staying campaign.

"Sydney's on the board so we'll have a look at that," Stanley said.

"In six months time over a bit more ground, she's going to be a serious animal."

Stanley paid $30,000 for Veuvelicious but the filly gave the young trainer his first Saturday metropolitan win.

Veuvelicious ($7.50) continued a recent run of wins on two-year-olds for jockey Stephen Baster who posted his fourth victory on a juvenile during the past two weeks.

Baster said the Northern Meteor filly belied her age with her racing manners.

"If someone said she was a three-year-old I would have believed them," he said.

Singularity ($11) finished second ahead of Top Sight ($5) in a bunched finish while the $3.80 favourite Lassitude failed to beat a runner home.

Lassitude's jockey Steven Arnold told stewards the slow pace did not suit his mount.
