Walter stablemates in midweek staying test

Tuesday 25 March 2014, 1:56pm

Guy Walter's carnival stocks have suffered a blow with the retirement of headline act Appearance but the stable still has plenty of ammunition for the coming weeks.

Appearance has suffered a ligament injury and leaves the track with nine wins from 19 starts, four at Group One level.

The Walter-trained Zanbagh cemented favouritism for the ATC Oaks with her win in Sunday's Keith Nolan and two stablemates could join her in the Classic if they can perform at Randwick on Wednesday.

Duke's Lass and Sweet Jaffa will test their staying credentials in separate divisions of the 1800-metre benchmark 70 for three-year-olds.

"They are both on trial for the Adrian Knox Stakes and we will see after that where they go," Walter said.

"They both look as if they will appreciate the longer distances."

Although Zanbagh will have her next start in the Group One Vinery Stud Stakes (2000m), the Group Three Adrian Knox Stakes over the same distance is a race that has produced two Oaks winners for Walter.

Republic Lass won the double in 2002 while Zanbagh's mother Wild Iris claimed both races two years later.

They both went to the Adrian Knox on the back of 1900-metre midweek wins.

Sweet Jaffa and Duke's Lass finished third and fourth respectively in a 1600-metre Newcastle maiden last Wednesday.

Walter has a long association with the family of Duke's Lass whose mother Operetta Lass was another of his four Adrian Knox winners before finishing sixth in the 2006 Oaks.

Her owner-breeders, Robert and Jan Bergstrom, also race Toydini who runs in Saturday's George Ryder Stakes.

Toydini is one of two runners left in the Group One race for the Walter stable after the loss of Appearance with triple Group One winner Streama to also run.

Kathy O'Hara rides Duke's Lass at Randwick while Christian Reith will be aboard Sweet Jaffa.
