Octavia out to confirm G1 plans at Valley

Tuesday 25 March 2014, 4:58pm

Stakes-winning mare Octavia will press her claims for a Group One start when she resumes in a Moonee Valley sprint on Saturday.

The Mike Moroney-trained Octavia runs in a 1000m mares' event and apprentice Jordan Childs has been booked to ride.

Childs will claim 3kg off the dual stakes winner's 57.5kg impost.

"If she is going well enough, she'll head to Adelaide for the Sangster," Moroney said.

The $400,000 Robert Sangster Stakes, known as the Sportingbet Classic, is a Group One sprint for fillies and mares at Morphettville on April 26.

A winner of the Listed Kevin Hayes Stakes as a three-year-old and Group Three Cockram Stakes in the spring, Octavia has had two jump-outs at Flemington including a win last Friday to ready her for her first-up assignment.

"She's forward enough but she'll come out of it with some improvement as well," Moroney said.

"It looks a pretty strong race on Saturday if they all line up."

Stablemate Saint Or Sinner, winner of his past three starts, is low down the entry order for the 1600m open handicap and Moroney could be forced to send him to Adelaide to race if he is balloted out at Moonee Valley.

Saint Or Sinner, a last-start Flemington winner on March 1, was in line to run in the Yarra Valley Cup but Moroney said the gelding knocked a leg and had to be treated.

"He's well over that now," Moroney said.

"He's going well and hopefully he'll head towards the Easter Cup."

The Group Three Easter Cup (2000m) is at Caulfield on April 19.

Moroney is also hoping to give Sydney-bound stayer Voleuse De Coeurs an exhibition gallop at Moonee Valley.

A first-up fifth in the Australian Cup, the Irish mare will have her next start in The BMW (2400m) at Rosehill on Saturday week.
