Brisbane Race Club chairman Neville Bell renewed a long-standing association with the Gollan family when Lead The Way won at Eagle Farm on Wednesday.

Starting favourite, Lead the Way ($1.60) lived up to his name when he beat Felton Phantom ($3.60) by three quarters of a length.

Bell admitted he was going to scratch Lead the Way because of the heavy track until he noticed first prize money was $18,000.

"I might donate the $18,000 towards getting a new racing surface at Eagle Farm," said Bell in reference to state government delays in announcing a grant for a track redevelopment.

Bell is also the owner of Kilto Park Stud and has had many horses with trainer Darryl Gollan.

However, Bell sent Lead The Way to Darryl's son Tony Gollan, who won the Group One William Reid Stakes with Spirit of Boom last Friday night.

"I bought Lead The Way as a yearling with the idea of breaking him in and putting him in the breeze-up sales," Bell said.

"But he was hurt three weeks before the breeze-ups and I got left with him."

Bell decided to race Lead The Way and decided the younger Gollan deserved his support.

The victory moved Gollan to 35 Brisbane wins for the season was he drew level in the trainers' premiership race with Matt Dunn.
