Draw no barrier for Mourinho in Albury Cup

A tricky barrier hasn't dented the confidence of trainer Peter Gelagotis who will run Mourinho in Friday's Albury Gold Cup.

The talented six-year-old came up with barrier 13 in the field of 16 plus two emergencies.

"It's certainly a tricky barrier and a lot will come down to tactics and speed," said the stable's racing manager Manny Gelagotis.

"Mourinho has tactical speed if needed and Hugh Bowman has ridden him before with success.

"It looks a very competitive race. It will give us a good chance to have a look at him going the reverse (clockwise) way and assess where we go from Albury."

Bowman won last year's JRA Plate (2040m) aboard Mourinho at Moonee Valley on September 27.

Manny Gelagotis said the stable was happy with Mourinho's progress into the Cup (2000m).

"His two runs this time in have been full of merit. We've targeted this race for some time," Gelagotis said.

"He gets out to his best distance and I don't think a wet track will worry him."

Mourinho resumed with a slashing second to Mouro in Group Three grade at Flemington on March 1 then finished sixth to Fat Al in the Golden Mile at Bendigo on March 15.

Gelagotis said the Easter Cup at Caulfield and Warrnambool Cup were on the radar for Mourinho but if the six-year-old won well at Albury they could consider a race over the Sydney autumn carnival.
