Double Dee to uphold family honour

Thursday 27 March 2014, 1:46pm

Well-related mare Double Dee has the chance to start an interstate family double in Saturday's Pantry Packer Handicap at Moonee Valley.

The mare's half-brother Shamus Award will command the main focus when he tackles some of Australasia's best three-year-olds in the Group One Rosehill Guineas in Sydney.

Double Dee's trainer Jason Warren will also be at Rosehill to watch Bel Sprinter's attempt to win his second straight Group One Galaxy.

Shamus Award's Cox Plate and Australian Guineas wins make him the star of the family but Double Dee has built an impressive record of her own.

She won one of her first 11 starts but has improved markedly this season with victories at three of her past four outings.

Brad Rawiller and Craig Newitt have been aboard Double Dee during her winning streak but Daniel Stackhouse takes over at Moonee Valley.

Double Dee pleased Stackhouse when he first rode the four-year-old in a gallop on Monday.

"I galloped her on the Mornington course proper and I was impressed with her straight away," Stackhouse said.

"She worked really well and left me very confident she can win again on Saturday."

Stackhouse says he expects Warren to target stakes races in Adelaide to attempt to boost Double Dee's value as a broodmare.

A daughter of Dubleo, Double Dee cost $32,000 as a yearling while Shamus Award, by the more fashionable sire Snitzel, was a $230,000 buy.

Double Dee, who has drawn barrier four, is a $5 chance in early betting behind the $3.50 favourite May's Dream.
