Doughty to repay his owners at Doomben

Friday 28 March 2014, 3:14pm

A $600 gamble on a namesake horse could turn into a $14,000 pay day for Gary and Kelly Doughty.

The couple were stunned when their first bid at a dispersal sale was accepted and they were able to walk away with Doughty.

The horse had been raced and named by Patinack Farm, and it was pure coincidence he shared their surname.

But the coincidences didn't end there, Gary explained.

"I went and had a look at him and he was in stall G13," Doughty said.

"Of course G for Gary and 13 is my lucky number, so we decided it was an omen and to have a bid on him."

The former top jockey now partly owns the Casino Prince gelding who is trained by his wife Kelly.

Doughty has now won five races and $45,000 prize money.

The Doughtys hope he can notch his first metropolitan win at Doomben on Saturday when he runs in the Bollinger Handicap (1350m).

If he does, Gary and Kelly will split the $28,800 winnings with long-term client and Morning Captain owner Vince Dickson, who has a half share.

Despite the wet weather during the week, a rain-affected track should not trouble Doughty who has won four of his six starts on slow and heavy tracks.

Gold Coast jockey Dale Missen, who has ridden Doughty at his past three starts for two wins and a second, will again have the mount.
