Wet track suits Knead The Dough: Walter

Friday 28 March 2014, 5:03pm

Guy Walter has come away with the major share of the prize money on his first visit to the Albury Cup and the trainer is hoping for another big pay day at Rosehill.

After a frustrating sequence of four seconds in a row in Sydney, Canny Ballad won Friday's feature event in the Riverina with stablemate Jacquinot Bay a close third.

Canny Ballad is by Dream Ballad, a stakes- winning half-brother to Tie The Knot who Walter trained to 13 Group One wins.

"It's a long way to come to find out if he runs 2000 metres but now that he does, it gives us a lot more options with him," Walter said.

The trainer's runners at Rosehill on Saturday include Streama and Toydini in the Group One George Ryder Stakes and a trio of mares looking to enhance their breeding prospects in the Group Three Epona Stakes (1900m) which has been renamed in tribute to the late veterinary surgeon Percy Sykes.

Mahara is already stakes-placed, running second to Diamond Drille in the Aspiration Quality while Goulburn cup winner Any Day Will Do ran third to Lilliburlero in the Triscay Stakes.

But the heavy track has brought Knead The Dough into calculations with her record of three wins and a second placing from four wet track starts.

"Knead The Dough loves the wet," Walter said.

"She has been running well but the rain brings her right into the race.

"The other mares are also going very well but her wet track form might give her an edge."

Queensland visitor Scorpio Queen is the TAB's $4.80 early favourite for the Epona which is the last of nine races at Rosehill which was rated heavy on Friday.

Mahara ($8) is the most favoured of the Walter trio at $8 with Knead The Dough at $11 and Any Day Will Do a $13 chance.
