Nathan Berry suffers illness complications

Tuesday 1 April 2014, 4:41pm

Arrangements are being made to bring seriously ill jockey Nathan Berry home to Sydney from Singapore.

Berry has been in a Singapore hospital for two weeks after collapsing at trackwork at Kranji where he had just begun a four-month riding contract.

He was first diagnosed with suspected viral encephalitis and later with NORSE syndrome which causes severe seizures.

The 23-year-old was placed in an induced coma last week and although he made some improvement, by Tuesday his condition had worsened with his new wife Whitney issuing a statement saying it was hoped to get him home as soon as possible.

"I cannot thank everyone enough for the amount of love and support you have all shown through this most difficult time in Nathan's and my life," Whitney Berry said.

"Nathan continued to improve over the weekend but it is with great sadness that I have to say his condition since, has had complications.

"Between myself, his team of doctors and members of both families, we have decided to bring Nathan home to Sydney as soon as we can.

"Nathan is my world and I don't know anyone who can fight this illness, like he is.

"Please now let us keep him in our thoughts and prayers."

Berry married the daughter of leading jockey Glyn Schofield in February.

His twin brother Tommy, also a leading jockey, is in Singapore along with close friend and fellow rider Christian Reith and members of the Berry and Schofield families.

Nathan's biggest win came on Unencumbered in the $2 million Magic Millions in January and the colt heads to Saturday's Golden Slipper with Craig Williams the replacement rider.
