Gordon Lord Byron to run in TJ Smith

Wednesday 2 April 2014, 9:43am

Irish visitor Gordon Lord Byron will run in the TJ Smith Stakes rather than the Doncaster Mile at Randwick.

The winner of last Saturday's George Ryder Stakes (1500m), Gordon Lord Byron is the winner of five races over over six furlongs (1200m) in Europe including the Group One Sprint Cup at Haydock.

Trainer Tom Hogan had been weighing up options for the first day of The Championships on Saturday week, saying the weather would play a big part.

He was unwilling to commit to 1600m start on a wet track and rain is forecast in Sydney over the next few days.

Ian Mackay, chief executive of The Championships, confirmed the TJ Smith as the target on Wednesday.
