Trainer Kelso Wood was left in a quandary about his galloper Seeking More and apprentice Kirk Matheson after they combined to win on Saturday.

Starting favourite, Seeking More ($3.10) made it five wins and a second from eight starts at Doomben when he beat Excellantes ($3.20) by a length in the Jim Beam Handicap (1110m).

Wood will now scan the race calendar to map a winter carnival campaign for Seeking More, but it is no easy task.

"He is very good at distances around the 1000 metres, but he just doesn't run out the entire 1200 metres," he said.

"It means races like the Queensland Lightning and Chief De Beers Handicap would be perfect for him."

"I may sound like I am contradicting myself but I would still like to give him a chance in a better feature race at 1200 metres.

"I just have to find one."

Wood was full of praise for winning rider Matheson who is apprenticed to him.

"He rode the winner just like I told him. He should be among the top riders here if he can stay out of the stewards' room."

Wood was referring to Matheson's six meeting suspension from Eagle Farm on Friday.

"He is always on the edge with his weight and he can't afford to be suspended," Wood said.

Apprentice Aidan Holt said Excellantes had raced well at his first start for six weeks but had never been going to catch the winner.

"He is looking for 1200 metres now and should be a chance in races in the coming weeks."

Meanwhile, promising Gold Coast galloper Final Crescendo will miss the winter carnival despite his impressive win in the Canadian Club Handicap (1200m).

Final Crescendo burst through a narrow gap to score after being held up for a run in the straight.

Trainer David Kelly will now spell Final Crescendo and bring him back later this year for the Brisbane summer sprints.

"I think he is one campaign away from being one of the best sprinters in Queensland."

Winning jockey Michael Cahill agreed the gelding has a bright future.

"He really sprinted when we finally got clear. He has plenty of potential."
