Royal Ascot decison for It's A Dundeel

Sunday 20 April 2014, 5:14pm

Royal Ascot in June has emerged as an option for both Queen Elizabeth Stakes winner It's A Dundeel and runner-up Sacred Falls.

It's A Dundeel is set to stand at Arrowfield Stud in the spring but managing owner and stud proprietor John Messara says a trip to England has not been ruled out for the six-time Group One winner.

"I need to talk it over with all the other owners. We will make a decision by Monday night.

"The closing day for nominations is Tuesday."

If the four-year-old did go overseas, Messara said he favoured the Queen Anne Stakes over 1600 metres in preference to the 2000m Prince Of Wales's Stakes.

"My feeling is the 2000 metres might be too tough," he said.

"The mile at Ascot is more akin to a mile here."

It's A Dundeel has a history of feet issues which have been managed throughout his stellar career by trainer Murray Baker and his farriers.

"He has shallow heels and that's another thing to think about," Messara said.

"It's just a management issue but going over there with different farriers is another thing to think about."

It was thought the Queen Elizabeth was the swan song for dual Doncaster Mile winner Sacred Falls but Waikato Stud, which has the breeding rights to the son of O'Reilly, is considering the Queen Anne.

A win at Royal Ascot would enhance the prospects of Sacred Falls becoming a dual hemisphere stallion.

Saturday's $4 million Queen Elizabeth Stakes brought the curtain down on the 10 races of The Championships, run over two days as part of the revamped Sydney autumn carnival.
