Gordon Lord Byron has Sha Tin work-out

Monday 28 April 2014, 4:40pm

World traveller Gordon Lord Byron has had a work-out at Sha Tin ahead of his bid to claim another Group One on his international tour.

The Irish sprinter-miler won the $1 million George Ryder Stakes in Sydney earlier this month and is now heading to Sunday's Champion's Mile in Hong Kong.

Gordon Lord Byron cantered on the all weather track on Monday morning under travelling companion Kate O'Brien.

O'Brien and Eddie Power, assistant to trainer Tom Hogan, have been at the horse's side since February 16 when he left Ireland on the way to the southern hemisphere with stops along the way at Newmarket in England and Melbourne.

"He's coped very well really. He could nearly fly the plane himself now," Power told the Hong Kong Jockey Club.

"He's an amazing horse. He travels better than I do. He seems to love it away from home.

"He didn't lose much weight on the flight over to Hong Kong and he's licked out his feed bin every day he's been here."

A three-time Group One winner in three different countries, Gordon Lord Byron has not been pushed on the track since arriving in Hong Kong last week and will have a serious gallop on the turf on Tuesday.

"He's in good order and hopefully he can run his race again come Sunday, but we're certainly not underestimating the quality of the opposition," Power said.

Gordon Lord Byron has finished fourth in the past two runnings of the Hong Kong Mile at the December International meeting.

He also ran in the $2.5 million TJ Smith Stakes two weeks after his Ryder win but failed to show the same finishing sprint on the heavy track.
