Stradbroke hopes for Reparations

Saturday 3 May 2014, 5:24pm

Anthony Freedman could launch a bid for the Group One Stradbroke Handicap with Reparations following the five-year-old's Listed win at Caulfield.

Reparations ploughed through wet conditions to win score his maiden stakes win in the Thoroughbred Club Cup (1440m) to provoke thoughts of bigger targets.

Freedman conceded the Darley-owned galloper was a long way back in the queue for a start in the $1 million Stradbroke (1400m) at Eagle Farm but hoped he would do enough to compete in next month's feature.

The trainer says Reparations has developed rapidly over the past eight weeks which has convinced Freedman he could have a lightweight hope in Queensland's feature sprint.

"He'd need things all in his favour but he wouldn't be without some sort of silly chance," Freedman said.

"If he were to run in a Stradbroke, he'd probably get a cheque and then he's up there and he can have a break."

Reparations, the $2.50 favourite, came from midfield to beat the on-pacer Loot `N' Run ($11) by a long neck while Dany The Fox ($5.50) was a length away third.

Dwayne Dunn's win on Reparations helped him to a treble after he won earlier in the day on Griante before completing his haul aboard Onpicalo in the penultimate race of the meeting.

Reparations provided the second leg of a running double for Freedman after Crucial proved too strong in the Ferntree Gully Nissan Handicap (1600m).

Apprentice Joseph Azzopardi steered Crucial ($5.50) to her fourth win from 27 starts when the mare prevailed over Serene Tanie who threatened to cause an upset when the $151 chance led for most of the race.

Like Reparations, Crucial is owned by Sheikh Mohammed's Darley operation which is set for a major change when John O'Shea takes over from Peter Snowden as head trainer on Sunday.

However, Freedman said his role as part of the Darley set-up would remain unchanged.

"I'm always on their roster sort of thing and I'll always get my share so they are very important to me," Freedman said.

"I'm only small now and Darley are a big part of it."
