Trainer hoping luck will change in Guineas

Thursday 15 November 2012, 4:46pm

Feature race wins are hard to come by and doesn't trainer Dean Binaisse know it.

Binaisse has come close to claiming Group races with the likes of three-time stakes placegetter Carnero, 2011 Cockram Stakes third placegetter Anabaa's Legacy and last month, Moreau was a luckless third in the Group Two Fillies Classic on Cox Plate day.

On Saturday she will be out to claim an elusive big race success for her trainer when she takes on the colts and geldings in the Group Two Sandown Guineas (1600m).

Binaisse will miss the meeting to fly to New Zealand for the Ready To Run Sale and he believes the trip might just be an omen.

"I've had my foot on the till but I can't seem to crack it," Binaisse said of his record in Group races.

"Sure enough, it will probably happen on Saturday because I won't be there.

"But I'd be quite happy to win it from New Zealand."

Moreau is still a maiden after seven starts but she has placed five times, including her third in the Fillies Classic two starts ago.

Her subsequent placing over 1700m at Flemington on Oaks day convinced Binaisse to start her at Sandown and he believes she is still improving.

"She's still very untapped. She's raw and green," Binaisse said.

Binaisse said Moreau resented being tightened by another runner at Flemington "and half-eased out of the competition" before regathering herself and attacking the line late.

Moreau is the only filly in the field of 16 and will be striving to become the fourth member of her sex to win the race in the past 11 years.

Dextrous was successful in 2002 while Cayambe (2005) and Moon Dragon (2001) also outgunned the boys.

"I'm not sure about the history but it would be a nice race for her to break her maiden in," Binaisse said.
