Former champion trainer Bob Hoysted died on Thursday night, aged 88.
Hoysted took over the training of the champion galloper Manikato after the death of his older brother Bon in 1978, preparing the sprinter to win five editions of the Group One William Reid Stakes.
Manikato also won four Futurity Stakes, the CF Orr Stakes and two George Ryder Stakes in a wonderful career that was highlighted by Hoysted's management of the star's troublesome legs.
Hoysted also won the Caulfield Cup with Sydeston while he also trained the outstanding filly Rose Of Kingston, the winner of the VRC Oaks, AJC Derby and SAJC Derby.
Hoysted served as the president of the Australian Trainers' Association between 1985 and 1997 while he received the Order of Australia for his services to racing.
The trainer joined Manikato in the Australian Racing Hall of Fame in 2008.
Hoysted is survived by his wife Iris and daughters Merilyn and Rhonda.
