Wez Hunter will consider a trip to Brisbane with Smokin' Joey after the gelding's breakthrough Group One win in the Goodwood at Morphettville.
Smokin' Joey's barnstorming finish to win Saturday's Goodwood (1200m) gave Hunter his first Group One win as a trainer while jockey Ben Melham made it back-to-back wins in Adelaide's feature sprint.
Melham returned from hip surgery to guide Smokin' Joey to victory on his first day at the races since the end of the spring carnival.
He had won the Goodwood on Platelet last year and it was that mare he chased down on Smokin' Joey to claim victory on Saturday.
While it was still sinking in on Sunday that he had become a Group One-winning trainer, the Mornington-based Hunter said he would consider pressing on to the Stradbroke Handicap with Smokin' Joey.
"We'll just see how he is," Hunter told RSN radio.
"We'll let the dust settle, see how he is and make a decision later in the week."
Smokin' Joey is not nominated for the $1 million Group One Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) on June 7 and connections would need to pay a late entry fee.
The six-year-old, who only joined Hunter's team last spring, has made a Brisbane winter carnival appearance in the past four seasons for his previous trainers Lee Freedman, Anthony Freedman and Mick Price.
