Robert Thompson honoured at Scone

Friday 16 May 2014, 4:34pm

Robert Thompson has been described as an ornament to racing by Racing NSW chairman John Messara at a special presentation to the jockey at Scone to recognise his 4000th winner.

Messara made the presentation on behalf of the industry while the chairman of Scone Race Club, Noel Leckie, made another presentation on behalf of the club.

Thompson said he had been riding at Scone for more than 40 years, first at the old White Park track and later at the new track.

"Every time I come up to Scone to ride it is a pleasure, it is such a good track," Thompson said.

"I would like to thank all the owners and trainers who have supported me over the years."

Thompson was presented with an inscribed silver tray by Racing NSW and a crystal vase by the Scone club.

Despite turning 56 last week Thompson said he had no plans to retire.

"Perhaps one day I will wake up and decide I have had enough but at the moment I am enjoying riding," he said.
