Havana has finally lived up to the big opinion of his trainer Paul Messara with his Group Three win at Doomben.
Havana ($14) showed his liking for dry tracks when he stormed home to beat Into The Red ($26) by a length with a half head to Dothraki ($6) in Saturday's Fred Best Classic (1350m).
The Fred Best could prove an excellent guide to the Group Two Queensland Guineas on May 31 as the three placegetters and fourth placed Hucklebuck ($2.90) are all set to clash again.
Messara said he had always had a huge opinion of Havana who had been a frustrating horse because he was unlucky in his races and did not handle wet tracks.
"We gelded him before this campaign and he has started to live up to our wraps on him," Messara said.
"Havana ran a good second at Doomben last week and we decided to risk backing him up within seven days."
"It was the first time we backed him up after seven days and you don't know how they will handle it until you try.
"We will press on to the Guineas and then we will see about a start in the Group One Stradbroke."
Messara said Havana would probably have to win the Guineas to get into the Stradbroke because of his relatively low prize money.
Chris Munce, who rode Into The Red, said the colt would not be out of place in the Guineas.
"It was a super run and I think the 1400m of the Guineas is not beyond him," he said.
Trainer Gerald Ryan said Dothraki would also press ahead to the Guineas after taking the field up to the leader Hucklebuck.
"He had to do a lot of work and it was a good hit out for the Guineas," Ryan said.
Trainer Philip Stokes was not disappointed with Hucklebuck's fourth after leading.
"He raced very fresh today and went hard in the lead," he said.
"That was always going to be our problem with him first-up over 1350m."
