Angland returns with four Randwick rides

Tuesday 20 May 2014, 1:56pm

Tye Angland will ease his way back into Australian racing with four rides in his comeback meeting at Randwick on Wednesday.

Angland has returned to the Sydney riding ranks after spending almost four seasons competing against the world's best jockeys in Hong Kong.

At the time of cutting short his Hong Kong contract, Angland was in fourth place in the jockeys' premiership behind three global superstars of the saddle in Zac Purton, Joao Moreira and Douglas Whyte.

Angland said he had returned to Australia for personal reasons.

He will ride for trainers Gary Portelli, Gerald Ryan, Matthew Dale and Chris Waller on Wednesday and bookmakers rate him a chance of winning at least one race.

"I think I have improved and matured in my riding," Angland said.

"Hong Kong is a place where you strike jockeys from all around the world with different styles and tactics."

A former champion Sydney apprentice and Group One winner of the 2009 Stradbroke Handicap, Angland's best prospect of making an immediate impact could rest with the Chris Waller-trained The Alfonso.

The Alfonso, a Canterbury winner in midweek three-year-old company in November, takes on older horses for the second time this preparation in the Testa Rossa @ Vinery Stud Handicap (1550m).

In finishing fourth to promising galloper As Needed at Rosehill on May 10, The Alfonso was beaten a length and will drop in class for Wednesday's race.

As Angland will be trying to re-establish himself, James McDonald and Nash Rawiller are preparing to settle down for a premiership stoush.

With Tommy Berry and Hugh Bowman taking up short-term Hong Kong contracts, McDonald and defending champion Rawiller have the title between themselves.

They have five rides each on Wednesday with McDonald having a stronger book on paper as he tries to improve his three-win advantage over Rawiller.
