Phelan Ready impresses in barrier trial

Tuesday 20 May 2014, 4:53pm

The 2009 Golden Slipper winner Phelan Ready showed he may yet break one of racing's longest run of outs with a slashing barrier trial win at the Sunshine Coast on Tuesday.

Phelan Ready has won only two races, the 2009 Magic Millions Classic-Golden Slipper double, but has earned $3.6 million in prize money.

He has not won a race in more than five years since his Slipper victory but trainer Jason McLachlan is hopeful that is about to end.

Ridden by heavyweight jockey Chris Kearney, Phelan Ready won the barrier trial by five lengths and was the only horse to break 53 seconds in 10 trials over 850m.

Phelan Ready is a noted wet tracker and the Sunshine Coast surface was in the heavy range but McLachlan was upbeat.

"He has come back from a spell looking great. The trial was really good and he pulled up well," he said.

"What can I say. I would love for him to win another race as he really deserves it."

McLachlan said Phelan Ready would return to racing in the Group Two QTC Cup (1200m) on May 31.

"We will go from there. Whether he is up to the Group One Stradbroke or perhaps the Glasshouse Mountain Sprint at Caloundra is up to him."

In other winter carnival news trainer Darren Weir said Akzar, who ran fourth in the Group One Doomben Cup last Saturday, was likely to back up in the Premier's Cup at Doomben on Saturday.

Trainer Donna Logan has indicated filly Telepathic will miss the Queensland Oaks (2400m) after running in the Grand Prix (2000m) on Saturday.

Telepathic will run in the Queensland Derby (2400m) on June 7 instead.

It means Sydney filly Arabian Gold is likely to start a short-priced favourite in the Oaks on May 31.
