Novel Dancer maintains perfect strike rate

Emerging trainer Shea Eden is convinced there is much to look forward to with Novel Dancer after the two-year-old filly passed her first city test with ease on Wednesday.

Novel Dancer followed on from her six-length debut win at Echuca with a 3-3/4 length victory in the Melbourne Truck Centre Handicap (1200m) at Mornington, prompting Eden to consider loftier targets next season.

"It's exciting, not only for me but there's also a fair few owners in this filly. This is what it's all about," Eden said.

"We set out to the Gold Coast (last year) to try to find a nice horse and I think we've got one."

Novel Dancer cost $50,000 as a yearling and Eden said the $1 million Magic Millions 3YO Guineas next January would be seriously considered as a long-term target.

He will also weigh up spring options for the daughter of Written Tycoon who crossed from the widest barrier to sit outside the leader in Wednesday's 1200m race before striding clear in the straight to beat Marrakesh.

"She does get in front and starts to wander, but that's not a bad problem to have," Eden said.

Novel Dancer is eligible to contest the $130,000 Elvstroem Classic (1300m) at Swan Hill on Friday week - a race restricted to VOBIS Gold nominated horses - but Eden will ponder his next move with the filly.

"Whether we go on from here or whether we go to the paddock, we'll just wait and see," he said.

Novel Dancer has been ridden by Ibrahim Gundogdu in both starts and he believes the filly, who started the $3.10 favourite, will improve from her latest experience.

"She still doesn't know what she is doing out there and the last half a furlong she was still only half-going," he said.

"She's a nice horse to get excited about."

Wednesday's meeting was a metropolitan fixture and apprentice Jessica Payne will not forget her first city ride after winning on Oamaru Rose in the Orbit Fitness Handicap.

Payne will travel to France next month to compete in an apprentices' only invitation race at Chantilly.
