Andrew Dillon needs rain to fall to give him an indication of how stable recruit Lady Melksham is travelling.
Lady Melksham joined Dillon's stable on the outskirts of Geelong after 13 starts for Flemington horseman John Sadler that yielded a win in the Group Three Cockram Stakes in 2012.
The mare later fractured her skull in a barrier incident at Caulfield before winning one of six subsequent starts for Sadler.
The five-year-old has missed a place in Adelaide at both of her runs for Dillon, leaving the trainer unsure how Lady Melksham is actually going.
"She's right up to the mark in her work after she had a few issues," Dillon said.
"She went well in Adelaide last time when she was in the wrong part of the track.
"I don't know whether it's a confidence thing with her but we just need to get her on to a heavy track to see how she's really going."
Dillon has entered Lady Melksham in races at Sandown and Morphettville and will take the Artie Schiller mare to the venue that gets the most rain before Saturday.
Dillon said he preferred to run Lady Melksham in the Jim Conway Handicap (1200m) at Sandown but rain is predicted in Adelaide on Saturday.
"She's travelled twice and I'd like to keep her here to run in Melbourne," Dillon said.
"We'll leave it as late as possible to decide where we will take her."
Dillon conceded the rising six-year-old could be in the final stages of her career before her owners began breeding with the valuable mare in the spring.
The TAB has Lady Melksham as a $15 chance to win the Jim Conway Handicap, which is likely to be run on a dead track, while the betting agency has her as a $15 shot to claim her Adelaide assignment, the Burns Ceiling and Building Supplies Handicap.
