Cully chasing jumps wins in two countries

Friday 30 May 2014, 1:42pm

Jumps jockey Richard Cully has a big few days ahead as he chases wins in two countries.

Cully has the plum mounts on Australian Hurdle and Australian Steeplechase fancies Fieldmaster and Krase at Sandown on Saturday.

He will ride at Hamilton in Victoria on Sunday before flying to New Zealand to compete in four jumps races at Ellerslie on Monday.

Cully was called on to ride the Patrick Payne-trained Fieldmaster in the $100,000 Australian Hurdle with the seven-year-old, a last start winner by 20 lengths, given 64kg which is under champion rider Steven Pateman's weight range.

He continues his association with the Payne-trained Krase who he rode to victory in a steeplechase at Casterton last Sunday.

"They're both great rides," Cully said.

"You want to ride the best horses in the best races. So I can't wait for Saturday."

But Cully, who had his biggest win in this year's Grand Annual Steeplechase at Warrnambool on the Payne-trained Chaparro, says the two horses need to be bring their A-games if they are to be in the finish in their respective 3400m races.

"Gotta Take Care is 21 rating points above Fieldmaster and only gives us five kilos so we're going to have to be at our very best to beat him," Cully said.

"And there are other horses in it too that will take beating but we go there with every chance."

Former New Zealand jumper Krase is being shaded for favouritism by Cats Fun who was second in the Brierly Steeplechase last start.

"Krase could end up a pretty decent horse here I think," Cully said.

"His win was very good at Casterton on Sunday and I just think the further he goes the better he's going to get."

Cully was born in Sydney and grew up in NSW before his Irish parents moved the family back to Ireland when he was 15.

He spent eight years there before returning to the southern hemisphere.

Cully rode in New Zealand for six seasons, winning two jumps jockeys' premierships, before deciding to base himself in Victoria in the past two seasons.

Monday's Ellerslie public holiday meeting includes the prestigious McGregor Grant Steeplechase in which Cully rides Amanood Lad, and the KS Browne Hurdle.

Cully rides Ima Dancer for Ann Browne, the widow of famous New Zealand jumps identity Ken Browne for whom the race is named.

It will be the first time Cully has ridden in New Zealand this year.

"I went probably seven or eight times last year. Not just for the big days but whenever I can get rides and it fits in with the races here, I like to go over," he said.
