Kent weighing up options for Escamillo

Saturday 31 May 2014, 1:34pm

Mick Kent is undecided on immediate plans for two-year-old Escamillo but believes the colt has the talent to be targeted at feature staying races next season.

Escamillo took up the running and raced to a three-quarters of a length victory in Saturday's Samson Handicap (1400m) at Sandown, leaving Kent to ponder whether to press on through the winter or spell the horse and aim at the spring.

"I could keep going with him now and go towards the Gibson Carmichael Stakes and then give him the spring off. The spring often comes around a bit quick and he would be a really nice autumn horse," Kent said.

"Or I can give him a short break now and run him in the spring."

The Gibson Carmichael Stakes, now known as the Listed Taj Rossi Series Final, is at Flemington in July.

Kent pinpointed the Group Three Caulfield Classic (2000m) at Caulfield as a potential spring target.

The Caulfield Classic, formerly Norman Robinson Stakes, has had a prize money boost to $750,000 this year.

Escamillo beat one runner home at his debut in the VOBIS Gold Ingot at Flemington on April 5 but Kent was happy to forgive that performance as he said the colt wasn't fully wound up.

He gave the youngster time to get over the run and was confident he would make his presence felt on Saturday.

Escamillo ($26) worked to hold the lead on the fence and went on to defeat favourite Lucky Generation ($3.20) despite hanging out in the home straight.

They cleared out from the rest of the field with Devon Princess ($6.50) four lengths away third.

"He's a nice horse and has always shown good ability. He certainly wants a trip," Kent said.

Escamillo's victory was the first in an early race-to-race double for Jackie Beriman with the apprentice also scoring on the Andrew Sawden-trained Big Buddie in the Jim Conway Handicap (1200m).
