Improving galloper Aldini buried his Eagle Farm hoodoo and added to the woes of punters with his win in the Listed Spear Chief Handicap on Saturday.
Aldini had not won in 11 previous attempts at Eagle Farm and was the fourth horse to score at double figure odds in the first five races.
Although backed from $18 into $14, Aldini was still a good result for bookmakers when he beat Elmantosh ($7.50) by a length with Choice Bro ($18) another three quarters of a length away.
Trainer David Kelly said Aldini's record at Eagle Farm was misleading because many of his runs had been against top quality horses.
"He has been an unlucky horse and on top of that he has had a few niggling injuries," Kelly said.
"But I have always believed he could blow away a field like he did today."
He said he believed Aldini was getting back to his best when he won at the Gold Coast at his previous start.
"He really fought on that day and I knew he was up to a city race after it," Kelly said.
Kelly is likely to set Aldini for the South Grafton Cup at the end of next month.
"I think he would run 1600 metres without any trouble and a race like the South Grafton Cup would be ideal," he said.
"It was this time last year that he was a Grafton restricted class horse and he won at that carnival."
Kelly trains at the Gold Coast but hails from the NSW northern rivers region and loves targeting races in his home area.
Winning jockey Craig Newitt was impressed with the turn of foot shown by Aldini.
"He put them away very quickly and was in no danger from the 200m," Newitt said.
Jockey Glen Boss said Elmantosh worked home well but was never going to catch Aldini.
