Australian record holder Robert Thompson has ridden the winner of the Newcastle race named in his honour at his ninth attempt.

His win on Pompidou in the 1300m event on Sunday brought the veteran jockey's career total to 3819.

The ride was a display of Thompson's talent as he brought the Greg Bennett-trained mare home from last along the rail to beat Strada Lodge by a long head.

A multiple Group One winner, Thompson lives on a farm in the Hunter Valley and travels many miles to race meetings every week.

The Newcastle club instigated the Robert Thompson Cup nine years ago and Bennett was thrilled to be a part of the jockey's win.

"I'm proud to be able to give him his first win in his own race," Bennett said.

Thompson typically played down his navigation skills on Pompidou.

"I just put her in the gaps, she took them," he said.

In Victoria another prolific country rider, Linda Meech, claimed her second Cup of the weekend at Donald after taking Saturday's feature at Dunkeld.

Meech was aboard the Terry and Karina O'Sullivan-trained Magic Me at Donald while the Dunkeld Cup was the fourth successive country feature for Pennon who is prepared by Peter Moody.

Pennon's other country Cups this spring have been at Murtoa, St Arnaud and Mortlake.
