Commanding Jewel on track for Tiara

Tuesday 10 June 2014, 6:07pm

The Tatt's Tiara remains the target for Commanding Jewel's comeback but trainer Leon Corstens will have no hesitation in pulling the pin if he is not happy with the mare's progress.

The 1400m race for fillies and mares at Eagle Farm on Saturday week is the final Group One race of the Australian season.

The injury-prone Commanding Jewel has pleased Corstens since her raceday gallop at Moonee Valley on Saturday and she has worked well at his Victorian base.

"She has done really well and I'm quite pleased with her," Corstens said.

"She will have a couple of good hit-outs and if she continues to do well I will definitely take her to Brisbane.

"But if I'm worried about her in any way, she will stay home and get ready for the spring.

"There is no pressure from the owners which makes it easy and we will just do what's right by her.

"She is a valuable mare and we will look after her."

A year after her three-quarter sister Atlantic Jewel won the 2011 Thousand Guineas, Commanding Jewel emulated the feat at her fifth start but has only been to the races on two occasions since.

Her four race wins include her most recent start when she beat Catkins in the Group Two Let's Elope Stakes last September.

The Chris Waller-trained Catkins went on to run a short half head second to her stablemate Red Tracer in the Myer Classic and recorded another Group One placing in the autumn when third to Steps In Time in the Coolmore Classic.

Catkins missed Saturday's Dane Ripper Classic at Eagle Farm with a minor injury but Waller said he expected her to recover in time for the Tatt's Tiara.

"She will be fine," he said.

"She just banged a leg and had to be treated for it.

"But she will gallop on Wednesday and again on Saturday and the following Tuesday."

Waller said Red Tracer had come through her unplaced run in the Stradbroke Handicap and would defend her Tatt's Tiara title.

Joe Pride will decide after Steps In Time runs in a barrier trial on Friday whether the mare goes to Brisbane or heads to the breeding barn.
