Trainer Mick Price's decision to chase black type with regally-bred filly Jazz Song paid dividends when she won the Listed Gai Waterhouse Classic at Ipswich on Saturday.
There wouldn't be many better bred fillies in Australia than the Coolmore Stud owned Jazz Song who is by super sire Fastnet Rock out of the top broodmare Absolut Glam.
Jazz Song ($3.70 fav) lived up to her good form against three-year-olds when she scored by a long neck over the heavily backed Griante ($3.90) while Sydney filly Breakfast in Bed ($8) ran home well to get third.
Price wasn't at Ipswich on Saturday and the filly was saddled up by leading Brisbane trainer Tony Gollan.
"She has been stabled with us and she has really bloomed up here," Gollan said.
"Whether they press on to the Tatt's Tiara next week will obviously be up to Mick and the owners after they see how she pulls up."
Jim Byrne took over on Jazz Song who was ridden by Craig Newitt when fifth in the Queensland Guineas at her previous start.
"I was a bit worried Craig might have wanted to come up for the ride but he didn't and things worked out well," Byrne said.
Jazz Song has now won two black-type races having taken out the Group Three Typhoon Tracy Stakes at Moonee Valley in February.
Earlier, country star Jack 'N' Me ($17) earned himself a trip to the city with a win in the Business Centre Ipswich Mile (1666m).
Jack 'N' Me, who cost only $1000, has been all over Queensland winning 15 races including the Taroom Cup, Roma Cup and Quilpie Cup in the past year.
Meanwhile, trainer Bevan Laming plans to start improving stayer The Inventor in the Queensland Cup (3200m) next month after his win in the Provincial Cup (2150m).
