Tony Gollan won eight local premierships as a rugby league player in Toowoomba and is on the cusp of capping a successful winter with his first metropolitan title as a racehorse trainer.
Gollan, a front rower, won two premierships with All Whites and six with Valleys in the Toowoomba competition before racehorse training called full time.
"I never played in a losing grand final team. But I had some very good players around me," Gollan said.
Gollan has been locked in a three-way battle with five-time Brisbane premier trainer Robert Heathcote and Murwillumbah-based Matt Dunn for most of the season.
However, recently he has opened up a lead which will be hard to run down with only six weeks of the season remaining.
Gollan's feature race double with Alma's Fury (Eye Liner Stakes) and Brave Ali (Ipswich Cup) on Saturday took him to 48 winners for the season.
Heathcote also had a double on Saturday and is on 42-1/2 with Dunn on 40.
Gollan's winter has been one to relish with his horses picking up more than $1.2 million prize money in feature races alone.
His best wins have been with Spirit of Boom (Doomben 10,000), Temple of Boom (Victory Stakes), Amexed (Rough Habit Plate), Pure Purrfection (Bribie Hcp), Brave Ali and Alma's Fury.
"Things have been going well but in this business you never take anything for granted," Gollan said.
Spirit Of Boom has left the stable to take up residence as a stallion at Eureka Stud but Gollan still has his half brother, fellow Group One winner Temple Of Boom, to look forward to in the spring.
Gollan does not have a runner in the final Group One of the season, the Tattersall's Tiara at Eagle Farm, while Dunn has entered Beach Babe and Splendora and Heathcote has nominated Fire Up Fifi.
All three trainers will have runners at Doomben on Wednesday and in the support races on Saturday.
