The distinctive voice of Paul Ambrosoli will be heard on radio and television for the final time on Saturday when he calls his last Wentworth Park greyhound meeting.
In a career spanning almost 50 years, Ambrosoli also spent half of that time as the on-course broadcaster at Hawkesbury calling thoroughbreds.
"Race calling was the only career I ever wished to pursue from the age of seven. Suffice to say, I have been very fortunate," Ambrosoli said.
"Racing people of my vintage have seen the very greatest of racing from each code.
"Champions from racing that will simply never ever be emulated.
"The benchmark for greyhound racing will always be Zoom Top. Her exploits are well-documented."
Sky Racing chief operating officer, Brendan Parnell, described Ambrosoli as an icon among race callers.
"The wonderful way he informed and entertained punters with his race calls is widely acknowledged," Parnell said, adding that Tim Newbold would be the company's new greyhound caller.
A long-time resident of the Hawkesbury area, Ambrosoli experienced one of his biggest thrills in racing last year when his granddaughter, apprentice Claire Nutman, rode his horse Footy Fan to win at Randwick.
