A first four in the Winter Cup was not quite as prestigious as Chris Waller's Doncaster feat but capped a satisfying Rosehill raceday for Sydney's leading trainer.
Waller trained four winners including Secessio who led in stablemates Hoylonny, Mulaqen and Permit in the Listed Cup (2400m) on Saturday.
It wasn't enough to give the trainer confidence he could break his metropolitan record of 167-1/2 set last season, even though he ended the day on 145-1/2 with nine Sydney meetings remaining.
"It's impossible," Waller said.
"We have had our four and five winners in a day but then at Canterbury on Wednesday we had three seconds.
"We just want to put the horses in the right races and hope they can win."
Sacred Falls won the Group One Doncaster from Royal Descent, Weary and Hawkspur to give Waller an unprecedented result in the famous autumn race.
Secessio was ridden by Tye Angland who also racked up four winners for the day, three for Waller and the Jason Coyle-trained Scream Machine.
Waller praised Angland who rode three winners at Randwick last Saturday and has made a big impression since his return from Hong Kong last month.
"Tye is a fantastic rider and Jason Collett could be the next Tye Angland," Waller said.
"I don't think jockeys really mature until they are 30 but going to Hong Kong puts five years on them."
That puts Angland, who will be 25 next month, right on the Waller criteria.
But even though Angland is now riding work for Waller, the trainer sticks to his preferred method of not employing a stable rider, choosing from a pool he says is the best.
"You can't rest on your laurels in Sydney because there is always someone ready to pounce," Waller said.
The trainer and Angland also combined with Done Nothin' Wrong, and Abbasso with Collett riding the promising Waller-trained two-year-old filly Winx.
Angland's other winner was aboard the Jason Coyle-trained Scream Machine, his second win this month on the gelding.
When he left Hong Kong, Angland was high on the premiership table with 48 winners and he will return next week for the final two meetings of the season and attempt to reach a milestone 50 winners.
The NSW TAB launched a special promotion on how many winners Waller would train on Saturday with punters who selected four getting $3.80.
