Trainer Caroline Allardyce wept tears of joy when her son James Orman booted home a winner at his first city ride at Doomben on Wednesday.
To make it a double celebration, Orman scored on one of Allardyce's horses Iniquity ($13) in the Drumbeats @ Lyndhurst Plate (2220m).
"I don't know whether to laugh or cry. It is one of the best thrills of my life," Allardyce said.
Orman is apprenticed to Allardyce and is regarded by many as one of the most improved apprentices in Queensland.
"He only got his city licence on Tuesday night so to ride a winner at his very first ride was just fantastic," Allardyce said.
Orman said he had been working hard riding at centres as far apart as Townsville in the north and Goondiwindi in the south in recent months.
"I obviously would like to head to town full time in the next year or so, but would like to outride my allowance around the provincial tracks," Orman said.
Orman has ridden 56 winners on all tracks and is starting to get the attention of top trainers.
Meanwhile, Tim Bell edged closer to the lead in the metropolitan jockeys' premiership when he rode his 50th city winner for the season on Heart Smart ($1.80) in the Sky Racing World Plate (1110m).
The victory took Bell to within three wins of leader Michael Cahill with eight meetings left for the season.
Trainer Steve O'Dea said Heart Smart, who came from last on the corner, had a lot of ability but needed more racing to overcome immaturity.
