Australian Turf Club officials have applied to move the date for next year's Golden Slipper, the world's richest race for two-year-old thoroughbreds.
In a shift that has to meet with Racing NSW and Australian Pattern Committee approval, the ATC wants to run the $3.5 million race on March 21.
For so long the flagship race of the Sydney autumn carnival, in recent years the Golden Slipper has been run on the first Saturday in April.
If the switch gets the support of Racing NSW, next year's edition will be run three weeks after the Blue Diamond Stakes, Melbourne's only Group One race for two-year-olds.
It will also give horses chasing Sydney's autumn triple crown for juveniles an extra week to prepare for the Group One ATC Sires' Produce Stakes.
"We've still got to sit down and discuss the whole autumn schedule with Racing NSW," the ATC's Matt Rudolph said.
"There is still a bit of water to go under the bridge but we hope to have an answer soon."
The ATC has received 1851 nominations for the 2015 Golden Slipper with two of Sydney's biggest stables leading the way with numbers.
Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum's Darley operation has 174 entries while five-time Golden Slipper-winning trainer Gai Waterhouse has nominated 109 two-year-olds.
Backed by yearling purchases from leading syndicator Star Thoroughbreds, premier Sydney trainer Chris Waller has almost doubled his entry from last year.
Waller has nominated 76 horses, up from 42 he entered in 2013.
David Hayes (65) and Gerald Ryan (57) are well represented along with this year's winning stable, Hawkes Racing, which has 51.
Peter Snowden and his son Paul have entered 49 horses in their bid to win the Golden Slipper in their first full season as a training partnership.
Sepoy, Pierro, Overreach and Mossfun, the winners of the past four Slippers, all have siblings entered.
