A US-bred stayer by the same sire as Melbourne Cup winner Americain will be one of the more interesting runners stepping out at Caulfield on Saturday.
Kindergarden Kid, a Grade Three winner over 2414m at Keeneland in 2012, makes his Australian debut for trainer Robbie Laing in the Sheen Group Handicap (1400m).
The son of Dynaformer has been off the scene for more than a year after suffering a tendon injury in France where he had two starts.
Part-owned by Kevin and Colleen Bamford who enjoyed Melbourne Cup success with Americain in 2010, Kindergarden Kid will be given the chance to qualify for a shot at this year's Cup.
"We wanted to start him off early," Laing said.
"He's been off the scene such a long time, we didn't want to do it all in one hit.
"We'll probably give him two or three runs then give him an ease-up and then go again."
Laing said the horse had been with him for about 10 weeks and he praised Colleen Bamford and the staff at her property in Melbourne's north-east for their work in rehabilitating the seven-year-old.
"We've done a lot of work with him down the beach and in the pool, just like I would with one of my hurdlers over the years. Just lots of long work, always on the bit," Laing said.
"He had an exhibition gallop at Cranbourne between races a few weeks ago and looked very impressive."
Laing has trained horses for the Bamfords over the years, among them 2006 Australian Cup winner Roman Arch.
"About eight years ago when I had to very quickly syndicate Roman Arch they came to the party and went into him in January," Laing said.
"Then about six weeks later he won the Australian Cup."
