BRC targeting young members

Sunday 6 July 2014, 1:32pm

The Brisbane Race Club will this week launch the biggest membership drive in its 150-year history as it strives to arrest a numbers decline.

The offer of a luxury car prize, cut price deals and attendance incentives is a major break from traditional marketing for the BRC which is the amalgamation of the previous two clubs.

The BRC's current membership is stable at about 2800 but the club hopes to top 5000 through its campaign.

Chairman Neville Bell said the membership drive's targets would include people under 30 as well as Queensland country and interstate racing fans.

"It is no secret all clubs, not just race clubs, have had work hard to get members in this day and age," Bell said.

"We are no different and hopefully we can let people Australia wide know about us."

"There are exciting times ahead in Queensland racing and we want members of our club to be aboard for the ride."

Late last month, Racing Queensland signed off on a 30-year deal with wagering company Tatts Group which will mean an extra $28.3 million annually for the industry.

The distribution of the funds has not been finalised but is expected to result in improvements to infrastructure at Eagle Farm and increased prize money.

Bell said there had been a decline in membership after a special deal for the amalgamation of the Queensland and Turf Club and Brisbane Turf Club ran out after three years.

"Some members dropped out when the cost of membership went back to the normal level," he said.

"We have been holding our ground since but we hope this campaign brings more people back to racing."

Bell said the club was keen to recruit racegoers aged under 30 and had special half price deals for young members.
