NZ whiz kid Hutchings teams up with Waller

Wednesday 9 July 2014, 4:47pm

Boom New Zealand apprentice Rory Hutchings rejected the chance for a more permanent stint with Chris Waller before answering an SOS from Sydney's leading stable.

Hutchings, who has ridden 107 winners in New Zealand this season, has four rides for Waller at Randwick on Saturday.

His mounts include Mamwaazel and The Alfonso, topweights who will benefit from the 19-year-old's 2kg allowance in the Sportsyear Handicap and Schweppes Handicap respectively.

Waller revealed he had invited Hutchings to work out of his Rosehill stable as part of a yearly scholarship prize he awards to Kiwi apprentices.

"He actually said 'no' to us," Waller said. "He said things are going that well in New Zealand that he wants to stay there."

Instead, Hutchings will commute between New Zealand and Sydney to link with Waller for the final three Saturday meetings of the racing season.

Hutchings will arrive sight unseen to Waller but his star is one the rise with no bigger fan than his master Graeme Rogerson.

"About all I know is that Graeme Rogerson has talked him right up," Waller said.

Waller also consulted one of his New Zealand owners before seeking out Hutchings' services after former stable apprentice John Kissick became unavailable when he joined the ranks of senior jockeys.

"We had four rides for John this week but he's decided to come out of his time instead of getting an extension," Waller said.

"So that's when we rang the boy from New Zealand."

Hutchings will follow his Sydney commitments with Asian Young Guns Challenge days in South Africa.

He finished second in last year's Challenge when it was held at Te Rapa in New Zealand.

Hutchings will also ride Reigning in the TAB Rewards Handicap (2000m) and Acapela in the Spring Carnival on Sale Handicap (1600m).

His rides are part of 18 acceptors across seven races for Waller.
