Don Reggio's will to win passed a stern test last time out to earn the three-year-old a berth in Saturday's Silver Bowl Series Final at Flemington.
Don Reggio endured hits on the head from a rival jockey's whip before rallying late to dead-heat for first in the fourth heat of the Silver Bowl Series at Echuca on June 23.
Trainer Chris Hyland says Don Reggio's raceday determination belies his attitude at trackwork.
"Behind the scenes he's a big, laconic and not very inspring horse and he just lopes along," Hyland said.
"He's a very ordinary trackworker as well but when the blinkers go on, he really has a dip."
Don Reggio has won twice and finished in the first four in all of his seven starts with the gelding finishing within two lengths of the winner in every outing but Hyland said immaturity has stopped the rising four-year-old from improving his record.
Don Reggio will carry the 54kg minimum in the Silver Bowl Series Final but Hyland said wide barrier draws would hamper the chances of the higher-rated runners in the $120,000 race.
Sydney trainer Chris Waller is likely to help Hyland's cause by scratching the topweight Amovatio after he drew the outside barrier in the 16-horse field.
Hyland said Don Reggio's chances rested on jockey Dale Smith being able to find cover and timing the consistent galloper's run in the straight to ensure he did not hit the lead too soon.
"I don't think he'd be too far away but he needs to have something to follow into the race," Hyland said.
"Those horses that consistently run around the mark, they just consistently keep doing it no matter where you take them."
