Hickman's planning to be worth the wait

Friday 11 July 2014, 3:37pm

Debating the handicapper is a lost cause for trainer Greg Hickman but he is hoping to conjure a happier result for a patient approach with stable star Taxmeifyoucan at Randwick.

Hickman says Taxmeifyoucan, topweight in the McGrath Estate Agents Handicap, has paid a hefty penalty for his win in the 2013 Scone Guineas.

But just as the victory put $300,000 in the bank for his owners, it has done nothing to help Hickman trying to extract more wins out of the four-year-old.

"He is weighted up to his best because he beat those horses at Scone," Hickman said.

"I mean he is only a class two horse and there are horses in the race (on Saturday) who have won six or seven races.

"But as the handicapper said to me `if you don't like it, give the money back'."

Hickman decided against a Ramornie Handicap start to concentrate on Saturday's race.

"It's easy to have these pie-in-the-sky plans but it's just about placing him where we can get something back," he said.

"I think this is best race I can put him in to get $40,000 to help pay for another six months of training. That's how I look at it."

Hickman will relieve some of the weight burden by using apprentice Sam Clipperton's 1.5kg claim, bringing Taxmeifyoucan into the race with 60.5kg.

Taxmeifyoucan remained steady on Friday as a $7 chance with the Joe Pride-trained Society Man the $4.80 favourite in one of the more open betting races at Randwick.

On paper, Taxmeifyoucan is the best of Clipperton's four rides but Hickman admits he won't be surprised if the apprentice figures on stablemate Jarilee.

Jarilee is the $71 outsider in the TAB Rewards Handicap (2000m) as she steps out for the second middle-distance start of her campaign.

Her race is expected to be dominated by three runners from the Chris Waller stable with Saigon Tea ($2.80), Reigning ($3.20) and Done Nothin' Wrong ($3.80) jostling for favouritism.

But Waller's stranglehold on the race doesn't reflect bookmakers' early thoughts on the trainer's overall chances at the meeting with Saigon Tea one of only two favourites from the premier stable.
