Phillip Stokes has his first Adelaide trainers' premiership wrapped up but he also hopes to add to his tally of winners across the border in Melbourne on Saturday.
Stokes has prepared 53 metropolitan winners in Adelaide to be 17.5 wins clear of the Leon Macdonald and Andrew Gluyas partnership as the season nears a close.
Stakes victories by Eclair Big Bang, Hucklebuck and Molto Bene have highlighted Stokes's five Melbourne wins during 2013-14 and the trainer is convinced it is the right time to give Eclair Samba his chance interstate.
The four-year-old will tackle the $100,000 Ascot Racecourse Hcp (2000m) at Flemington.
Eclair Samba has five wins from 11 starts in South Australia including a last-start victory over 2014m on heavy ground at Morphettville two weeks ago.
"He hit form last start and he seems to hold it for two or three runs and wet tracks are not a problem for him," Stokes said.
"He's down in the weights so I thought it would be a good time to send him over before he gets up in the rating points.
"Obviously this is harder than Adelaide but we'll give him his chance."
Eclair Samba has firmed from $5.50 to $4.60 and is on the second line of TAB fixed odds betting behind the Chris Waller-trained Fulgur ($4).
Flemington was rated in the dead range on Thursday.
The Adelaide premiership was not something Morphettville-based Stokes expected to claim at the start of the season.
"I never thought I would be able to achieve that because we just don't have the number of horses. We've only got 25 to 30 in work," he said.
"It's been a great season."
