Bruce Hill looking to southern spring

Friday 18 July 2014, 12:54pm

Group One placegetter Teronado is back in work at the Gold Coast and trainer Bruce Hill is hoping some of his stablemates can measure up and join him on a southern spring campaign.

Hill believes rising three-year-old Eljetem, who tackles the BMAG Hcp (1600m) at Eagle Farm on Saturday, has the potential to be competitive in top races once he matures.

"The penny hasn't dropped with Eljetem just yet. But I know what he can do and we will just have to take it as it comes," Hill said.

"Maybe it will be too soon but we will see after Saturday."

Eljetem was a strong-finishing third behind Jumbo Prince in a 1500m two-year-old race at Eagle Farm two weeks ago.

Hill also has Startsmeup in the Netball Disney Classic Hcp(1300m) on Saturday and believes the gelding is nearing his first win in 18 months after a good fifth in the Ramornie Handicap at Grafton.

He is likely to keep Startsmeup at home during the spring but Elmantosh is another possible travelling mate for Teronado. Elmantosh will run at Doomben on Saturday week.

Hill is yet to map out a campaign plan for Teronado.

"I would like to talk about Caulfield Cups but we have to win a few first to get in. Also we are still to learn if he can stay," Hill said.

"When we finally got up to a staying distance last time it did nothing but rain and he isn't at his best on wet tracks."

Teronado was well beaten in the Australian Derby on a heavy track but finished no worse than fifth in his other six autumn starts in Melbourne and Sydney including a third in the Rosehill Guineas won by Criterion.
