Gerald Ryan got little joy out of the first race at Rosehill on Saturday but was more than happy with a solo gallop by Group-winning two-year-old Rubick.
As a part-owner of Inz'n'Out, the trainer watched as the youngster came in 2-1/4 lengths behind the Gai Waterhouse-trained Liberation in the Inglis Race Series Hcp (1200m).
Victory would have netted a $100,000 Inglis bonus in addition to first prize and a BOBS bonus but the colt's effort was underscored by the discovery of a post-race injury.
"He has been galloped on and stripped on his off hind and also lost a shoe," Ryan said.
"Had it been any deeper he would have stripped his tendon."
The stewards film indicated the incident had happened when Inz'n'Out was crowded as the field jumped.
Ryan was pleased to let a relaxed Rubick have a leisurely gallop over 600m before being urged along by Brenton Avdulla over the final 200m.
The winner of the Blue Diamond Prelude and fourth behind Earthquake in the Group One Blue Diamond Stakes, Rubick covered the 600m in 35.65sec.
"If my reckoning is right he went pretty fast for the final furlong," Ryan said.
"He is right where I'd like him to be.
"He has had eleven weeks work and will be ready to race next month."
Rubick is scheduled to return in the San Domenico Stakes (1100m) on August 16 before travelling to Melbourne for the Group Two Danehill Stakes.
"The Danehill will be the test whether he handles the straight course at Flemington," Ryan said.
"He gives me the impression he will and as long as he does, we will aim him at the Group One Coolmore Stud Staks."
