Regan Bayliss will never forget his first ride in a race at the famous Flemington racecourse.
Bayliss won on the John Sadler-trained Reckless Assassin in Saturday's Rising Stars Final, a race restricted to apprentice riders, to prompt a double celebration for the 17-year-old.
Reckless Assassin's victory also resulted in him sharing the Rising Stars title with Jye McNeil.
"It's just everything I've ever dreamed of," Bayliss said. "It's just a great thrill."
Bayliss, who is apprenticed to Peter Moody at Caulfield, guided Reckless Assassin ($10) to a three-length win in the 1600-metre event over Rememba Howe ($9.50) while Madam Nash ($14), ridden by Bayliss's brother Jake, finished third.
The Rising Stars Series comprises 24 races around country and provincial Victorian racetracks with the final at Flemington.
McNeil was 12 points in front of Bayliss going into Flemington but Bayliss earned 12 points for his win and McNeil failed to add to his tally as he finished outside the top five on Mossmoney.
Bayliss had won two other races in the series at Kyneton in December and Mornington in January.
He did his homework, watching all of Reckless Assassin's replays and was convinced the mare was a better chance than bookmakers had rated her.
"I knew she was going to definitely be competitive today and she showed that," Bayliss said.
