The first Group One race in Sydney for the new season is seven weeks away but for emerging youngster Inkling, it might not come soon enough.
Inkling is set to start the shortest-priced favourite at Randwick, the final Saturday metropolitan meeting of the 2013-14 racing term.
The two-year-old has been earmarked for the $1 million Golden Rose on September 13 and trainer Peter Snowden hasn't ruled out a bid for those spoils, pending the horse's performance in Saturday's TAB Early Quaddie Handicap (1150m).
But he is also conscious timing could be an issue.
"I'm mindful it is his first prep and it's still a fair way to go to that race," Snowden said.
"Whether he gets to that or one of the lead-ups maybe, well wait and see.
"From where I stand now I would think he'd have this run and maybe the Run To The Rose in a fortnight. Then maybe we give him a breather and come in at the back end of the Melbourne carnival."
Inkling showed above-average ability with a dashing 5-3/4 length victory on debut at Warwick Farm last month before a forgivable third to Delectation at Rosehill when his racing manners brought him undone.
A $1.75 favourite in early markets for Saturday, Inkling is at $35 for the Golden Rose.
"I thought his run was quite solid last start. He over-raced a bit early and it probably cost him his chance of winning," Snowden said.
"If he's going to measure up to better races in the coming weeks he needs to stand up here."
Snowden is also upbeat about Blademeister who steps up to 1550m in the other two-year-old event.
But weight of sentiment will be with his final runner, I've Got The Looks, who makes her debut for the stable in the TFE Hotels Great Weekends Handicap (1150m).
I've Got The Looks gave Wendy Walter, wife of late trainer Guy Walter, her final winner before she stepped away from racing.
Having shared Warwick Farm as a training venue with the Walters for many years, Snowden says a victory by the mare would be special.
"She was Wendy's last winner so I'd like to think she can carry that on and keep the ball rolling for her," he said.
