What he lacks in experience, Monticule makes up for in pedigree heading to his debut at Randwick.
The two-year-old will have his first race experience over 1550 metres on Saturday but his trainer Gerald Ryan has no qualms about sending him out over the distance.
The gelding is by 2008 Kentucky Derby winner Big Brown out of A Material Girl who hails from the family of multiple Group One winner Divine Madonna and the recently-retired Ryan-trained Angel Of Mercy.
"He has had three barrier trials to get ready for the races and he is bred to go over ground," Ryan said.
"A two-year-old of David Payne's, Brown Bomber, won over 1800 metres recently.
"It's late in his two-year-old year and I don't think he will have any problems with it."
Monticule beat subsequent provincial winner Echo Prince in a 1030-metre barrier trial on July 7 and finished in front of Brown Bomber when third in a trial over the same distance on Monday.
"He is a really nice gelding. I earmarked him at the sales and a couple of people were interested but bought other horses," Ryan said.
"He went off the radar a bit but then David Raphael bought him."
Raphael is also a shareholder in Group winning two-year-old Rubick who will return to racing in next month's San Domenico Stake (1100m) before heading to Melbourne for a spring campaign aimed at the Group One Coolmore Stud Stakes.
Rubick had a solo gallop at Rosehill last Saturday and has continued to please his trainer.
"He looks great, he has worked well since the gallop and is where I want him," Ryan said.
Bookmakers are backing Ryan's judgment regarding Monticule who is on the fourth line of betting in the TAB's market at $6.60 behind Testashadow ($2.80), Statton ($4.80) and Blademeister ($5).
